Gambling and heredity / treatment?

ejffejff asked:

I have a problem with gambling. I am very frugal when it comes to buying clothes, food, etc. but don’t have a problem when it comes to putting a $100 into a casino machine.

My father was treated for alchoholism when I was a kid. Could it be that I inherited something similar to that of my father and his father (who I have heard was also an alcholic)?

BTW – I do drink, rarely, and have never had the “urge” to drink but love thrill of winning / hate losing, regret, self-hate, shame and all the emotions I feel after I go to the casino.

Can I get medication / counseling for this?

I am scared of gambling – not just scared, I think it may be a phobia – and I don’t know why?

lost_syren asked:

I know of no instances in my childhood or family life where gambling has ever featured. I don’t have a father who lost the house on a game of blackjack or anything of the sort.

For a very long while I’ve wanted to learn to play Poker. This weekend my boyfriend tried to teach me and I broke down into tears as soon as he mentioned a blind bet.

This surprised both of us. I just shivered and cried for a good 20 minutes, in which he tried to identify what the problem was. I didn’t even want the poker chips near me, they weren’t even realistic ones, just very small ones that came in a poor quality poker set.

This was in my bedroom, it was daylight, there were only us two present and we weren’t going to play for money, so it was familiar surroundings and nothing that should have triggered that reaction.

I’m worried! Obviously I don’t have a life ambition to gamble in a fully fledged casino, so it is not a major problem, but I’m still puzzled as to why this happened.

I was raised Catholic but haven’t practiced for a long while, and I don’t know if anything in the doctrine talked about gambling?

I would just really like to know where this issue lies.

Heather
